San Diego Ranked 6th Most Expensive City to Have Baby

Seven of the 10 most expensive cities are in California, according to a Redfin report.

San Diego is one of the most expensive cities in the country for raising a baby, according to a report by Redfin.

The report breaks down the cost of a baby’s first year into five categories: housing, childcare, healthcare, baby items and energy. The report calculates the average cost of a baby’s first year at $26,000 across all cities in the report. 

Redfin gathered housing data on 40 different cities across the country in order to determine average costs and rankings per city, according to the San Diego Daily Transcript.

The Redfin report finds San Diego ranked 35th in affordability, with an average first-year cost of $32,700. Housing is the biggest contributor to San Diego’s ranking, with an average first-year cost of $13,300. 

Seven of the 10 least affordable cities are in California, including San Jose, Santa Cruz and San Francisco. The most affordable city in the rankings is Atlanta, Ga., with an average first-year cost of $18,500. San Jose ranks last in affordability, at $41,600.
