Non-Profit Helps Race Horses Move on ‘After the Finish Line’

A local woman is helping raise money so horses can have a new life after their racing days are done.

Horse racing brings thousands of people to Del Mar year after year, but injuries and old age put a time limit on how long the same thoroughbreds will meet them there.

Then what happens?

Dawn Mellen is a Rancho Santa Fe woman who started the non-profit After the Finish Line in 2007 to raise money for organizations that help horses have a second life after their racing days are done, according to a KPBS report.

Around this time last year, Mellen was at Del Mar Horse Park to watch a former race horse named Skylar practice jumps.

“These horses just want a second chance—it’s like he’s saying, let me show you what I can do," Mellen told U-T San Diego at the time.

Mellen recently spoke to KPBS about her fundraising efforts. Listen to the full story on KPBS.
