SANDAG Gets $14 Million to Replace Aging Rail Bridges Near Del Mar

The project will replace four wooden-trestle bridges in Los Penasquitos Lagoon that date to the 1920s and 1930s.

SANDAG has received a $14 million federal grant to replace four aging timber-trestle bridges in the Los Penasquitos Lagoon, the agency announced Friday.

The San Diego Association of Governments said the work is needed to improve the reliability of both passenger and freight services. The COASTER, Amtrak and freight services use the affected rail line.

The four bridges date to the 1920s and 1930s and require frequent and costly maintenance. Without replacement, the speed limit for trains in the area would soon be reduced to 30 mph, the agency said.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The total project will cost $25 million, with the additional funds coming from other sources.

The North County Transit District said 2.7 million passengers a year ride trains over the affected bridges.
