City Remembers Del Mar Resident Paul Haydu

Paul Haydu, physician and husband of Del Mar Deputy Mayor Lee Haydu, died Feb. 26 after a long battle with leukemia.

The city of Del Mar paid tribute to longtime resident Paul Haydu at its Monday night city council meeting. Haydu, husband of Deputy Mayor Lee Haydu, died last week. He was 67.

Haydu was a physician. He served as medical director of Tri-City Medical Center's Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center for the past few years. Prior to that he served as an attending emergency physician at Palomar Pomerado Health for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Michelle and Sarah.

"He was fond of saying, that except for the fact that it killed you, cancer was a favor," Haydu's Legacy.com obituary noted. "It helped him to become spiritually sensitive, enjoy each day, and to appreciate people in a way he hadn't been prior to learning that his life was going to be limited. He felt it was a lesson we all could learn from."

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., March 17 at the Powerhouse in Del Mar.

"On behalf of the city and all her colleagues we extend our thoughts of support and healing to Lee and the Haydu family," Mayor Terry Sinnott said during a City Council meeting Monday night.

Councilmember Don Mosier, a friend of Paul Haydu, also provided kind words on Monday night.

"I treasured his friendship," said Mosier. "...he was very brave throughout a long process and through it all he maintain optimism and care."
