Beth Israel of San Diego - Men’s Club Dinner Forum - Featuring Congressional Candidate Carl DeMaio

We are pleased to announce that Carl DeMaio, candidate for the United States Congress will be the featured speaker at the April Dinner Forum of the Men’s Club of Beth Israel.  The Dinner Forum will take place Wednesday evening, April 23, 2014 at 6:30 pm.  Candidate DeMaio will discuss the plans and goals that underlie his bid to represent California’s 52nd Congressional District. The 52nd Congressional District includes the cities of Coronado and Poway, and most of the northern portion of the City of San Diego.  The district is currently represented by Scott Peters.

Carl attended Georgetown University and graduated with a degree in International Politics and Business. While attending Georgetown, he worked as a political intern in Washington, D. C., ultimately taking a position with the Congressional Institute. He served as the Institute's Director of Planning.

After college, Carl established The Performance Institute, a for-profit think tank that provided training for government officials.  He went on to also establish the American Strategic Management Institute, which was modeled on The Performance Institute and provided training and education in corporate financial and performance management. He sold both companies to the Thompson Publishing Group in late 2007.

Carl ran for the District 5 seat of the San Diego City Council in the 2008 election and won the seat outright in the June primary election, defeating his opponents with 66% of the vote.  On the city council, Carl was vice chair of three committees: the Natural Resources and Culture Committee, the Budget and Finance Committee, and the Audit Committee. On taking office, he released a number of studies and proposals on city employee compensation packages and pension benefits. He argued that salaries and benefits of city employees should be reduced to levels consistent with the local labor market.

In  November 2010, Carl released a five-year fiscal reform plan dubbed the "Roadmap to Recovery," advocating for a variety of pension reforms, the reduction of city employee salaries and benefits, and the opening up of city services to competitive bidding.

Carl ran against Bob Filner for Mayor of San Diego in 2012, but was defeated by a 5% margin. He considered running in the November 2013 special election that followed Filner’s resignation, but chose to stay in the race for Congress.
