Woman's Death by Train in Del Mar Ruled Accidental

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the Aug. 16 death of a 42-year-old woman struck by a train in Del Mar an accident.

The Aug. 16 death of Denise Oberlercher, a San Francisco resident, was ruled an accident by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office last week. A freight train had struck and killed the 42-year old, who was sitting on the tracks at Coast Boulevard and 15th Street in Del Mar shortly after midnight.

Though warning bells and lights activated and the engineer of the train sounded his horn, Oberlercher did not move, authorities said. The train engineer stopped the train and ran to her location and called 911, according to the Medical Examiner's Office report.

Del Mar Fire responded and pronouced Oberlercher death at the scene.
