A total of 18 energetic puppies and two fluffy kitties celebrated the Kentucky Derby, which runs Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, a day early with a race of their own—the KenBARKY Derby at the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Each of the eager contestants, named after a contending derby horse, is available for adoption.

Race spectators cheered on their favorite puppy as the pups left the starting gate and feverishly ran in every direction—including the finish line.
