Sewage Spill Contaminates Water at Del Mar Beach

Beachgoers should stay out of the water in the area near Powerhouse Park in Del Mar after a sewage spill Friday, the County Department of Environmental Health said.

An unknown blockage in a sewer line caused about 750 gallons of sewage to spill from a manhole on Luneta Drive in Del Mar, officials said.

It then flowed into a nearby storm drain that leads to the 15th Street outfall at Powerhouse Park.

The blockage was cleared in half an hour, but signs warning of the contamination are posted 500 feet north and south of 15th Street and will remain there until samples of the water confirm that it is safe for recreational use.
