Tarbuton Launches the Only Israeli Cultural and Hebrew Language Summer Day Camps in San Diego

San Diego, CA, 05/07/13 The Tarbuton is launching an Israeli Cultural and Hebrew language themed day camp this summer.  Keitana is a three hour, ten day, Israeli style summer camp conducted in Hebrew.  Two camps are offered each session: Hebrew Immersion for Hebrew Speakers who are proficient in Hebrew and Hebrew Enriched for Hebrew Learners.

The camp is the only Hebrew-language day camp in San Diego and will be offered for the first time through a San Diego Public School District.  Del Mar is offering the camp in its Summer Enrichment program which is open to students outside the District as well.   This is the 4th summer that the Tarbuton has offered its dual-language Hebrew summer camp staffed entirely by Hebrew speaking teachers.  To see videos click here.   Session Dates are July 8 –July 19, and July 22-Aug 2 in Carmel Valley mornings 9:00 a.m. -Noon.  The registration deadline for the July sessions is May 24. The August session dates are August 12-August 23 in La Jolla with a full day option. 8:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m.  Fees begin at $285 with additional rates for full day and optional Hebrew refresher in August.    

The co-ed camp, for children entering grades K-6, will offer Daily Activities to include: art projects, singing Israeli music (classic songs), skit/short play and improvisation, dancing, basketball and/or soccer.   Sample themes: Tastes of Israel, Haganat HaTeva and conservation (Nature), Shefayim (water fun), Edot HaOlam (Faces of Israel).  Complete with “Lachmaniot and Choco”, (i.e. soft roll and chocolate milk traditional camp snack in Israeli summer camps) Israeli counselors will use classic, Israeli literature, activities that reinforce reading/writing skills for those who can read or are learning, and encourage children to respond in Hebrew throughout the day.  Hebrew will be the primary language spoken. Keitana does not include the Tarbuton reading/writing instructional program but helps refresh and retain skills through the summer.

“Keitana” is a program of the Tarbuton, Israeli Cultural Center’s eight-year initiative building Jewish community through Israeli Cultural experiences.  The Tarbuton serves families through Israeli cultural enrichment programs weekdays and Sunday including Israeli performing arts Dance Troupe and Singing group.  Adults enjoy Israeli book and film clubs and Café v’Ivrit.  Programs are offered in Hebrew but also in English with an emphasis on celebrating Jewish and Israeli culture. http://www.tarbuton.org
