Local High School Student Meets with Senator Boxer

Thomas Ohno-Machado is the president of the Torrey Pines High School Autism Awareness Association. His mother, Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Informatics at UCSD. They met Senator Boxer and talked to her staff at the Senate Building in Washington, DC about National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for research.

Thomas is an advocate for awareness and education about Autism Spectrum Disorders.

From Washington DC, Thomas traveled to Boston to meet with officials from the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services. He also made a presentation to the teachers and administrators at the New England Center for Children (NECC).

The Autism Awareness Association at Torrey Pines High School is very active, having about 60 members who work  towards awareness, volunteering and fundraising around San Diego. 

Thomas is a senior at Torrey Pines High School.
